Mr Will Oxley, a marine biologist with the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) in Townsville, has been named in London as one of two Australians in the group of 12 skippers for the 2000/2001 BT Global Challenge yacht race. In this 10-month race, participants circumnavigate the world against the prevailing winds and currents.
Mr Oxley, aged 34, is a lifelong and highly-qualified sailor who has competed in the Sydney-Hobart yacht race (including the ill-fated 1998 race, in which he was aboard the yacht B-52). He was chosen from a field of 186 candidates to lead a disparate crew on the 30,000 nautical mile race starting from Southampton in the UK in September 2000. The selection process took a year, and the other Australian chosen is professional sailor Mr Stephen Wilkins from Sydney. The other 10 skippers are all British.
