Portrait : "At every stage, I get more enthusiastic about sailing," says Simeon. An experienced long-distance racer, Simeon has already sailed more than 40,000 miles. He was only five years old when he took part in his first race, on an Optimist, right after he got his swimming permit. Simeon has already spent up to 16 days at sea, so long-distance offshore racing will not be a problem for him. Simeon grew up in a shipbuilding family, as his parents owned a 36 foot S&S. He grew up studying how ships are built and designed, and has performed every task possible on boats both large and small. This technical point of view will come in good stead on the V70. His early hero was Dennis Connor. Simeon developed his sailing intuition at
a very early age. Simeon was only six month old when he was taken aboard his first
offshore boat, and at 14 began to steer a J44. Since 1999 he has skippered the
J44. His longest race was 2,800 miles. Simeon has spent six years at university,
the first four years studying naval architecture in Haarlem. Before graduation
he has apprenticed at several shipyards across Europe. The last two years he has
studied economics in Groningen. "To sail the Volvo Ocean Race is a dream
come true! And to win it, of course." |
