Mike has successfully participated in just about every major world-class sailing event there is, including victorious runs in the 1993 Sydney-Hobart, the 1993-1994 Whitbread on New Zealand Endeavour, the America’s Cup, the 1997-1998 Whitbread aboard Merit Cup and recently setting the new transatlantic speed record as helmsman aboard the Mari Cha IV. Just to name a few.

As Roy Heiner stated when introducing Mike to the team: "...he matches with the team and with our boat. He has vast experience in sailing with a canting keel, a new feature of the specially designed class of the V70 to be used in this upcoming edition of the Volvo Ocean Race. As this device will be applied for the first time for a sailing race over such a long distance, Mike is the natural choice of skipper for us."
