The first thing you'll notice about Jan is that he carries a large shark tooth on a chain around his neck. Asked if he wore it as a lucky charm, he explained that in fact he took it from a great white he once caught and uses it – logically – as a knife. So it's not dead weight: it's useful.

Jan's most harrowing moment so far was aboard Club Med in "The Race" when skimming eerily close by icebergs at 38 knots in the Southern Ocean. Now that would be scary. He's not leaving anyone close behind during the race and tells us that his favourite meal on board is anything edible because "you're always hungry out there". If he weren't a sailor, he would have liked to be an architect.
