Portrait :

Dave injured his knee during the last Volvo Ocean Race (2001-2002) and was temporarily incapacitated. "It was frustrating because I could see the rest of the guys sweating it out and I couldn't help." Worse, there was even talk of airlifting him out, but it turned out to be OK in the end and he stayed on for the rest of the race. Dave is the youngest crewmember but it doesn't show. Like the rest of the crew, he's a team player.

During the last VOR he took a woolly hat along. "Three weeks into the race it got cold and I put it on; you should have seen the expressions on their faces! Turns out I was the only one who packed something extra. So I'm not taking anything this time. It's part of the team spirit – we all save as much weight as we can. You don't want to be the odd one out."
