Brad recounts an educational experience not worth repeating if he had a say in it. "That’s got to be "man overboard". It’s the kind of experience that stays with you forever. We almost lost someone on New Zealand Endeavour in the Whitbread 1993-1994 in the Southern Ocean. It was freak incident and he got knocked overboard. Luckily he was attached to a line and we got him back on board. In a state of shock but safe. But it was too close, with the water around two degrees centigrade..."

Team success sometimes demands personal sacrifices too. Brad has a wife and three sons of which the youngest is only four months now. "I just missed his birth by six hours coming back from a race." It’s all in the game.
